REM Lyrics: It Happened Today

21 December 2010

Featuring Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder on vocals with Micheal, It Happened Today is from R.E.M.'s album Collapse Into Now. It was the first single released off the album.

Collapse Into Now also features another guest vocalist with Patti Smith appearing on Blue. The song itself is a classic jangly guitar effort from Peter Buck and sees the return of some Mandolin.

It Happened Today Lyrics:

This is not a parable
This is a terrible
This is a terrible thing

Yes I will rhyme that, after, after all I've done today
I have earned my wings

It happened today. Hooray! Hooray!
It happened. Hip, hip, hooray!

We'll leave the allegory to a different Bible story
Out of deference, defiance, the choice
Closing on a promise, after, after all I've done today
I have earned my voice

It happened today.
Hooray! Hooray!
It happened.
Hip, hip, hooray!

Discoverer Lyrics R.E.M.

16 December 2010

Discoverer Lyrics R.E.M.

Discoverer Lyrics from R.E.M's album Collapse Into Now. Released world wide for free as an MP3 download from REMHQ, Discoverer is the first song on Collapse Into Now. It's a classic uptempo REM song.

Lyrics:

Hey baby
This is not a challenge
It just means that I don't love you as much as I always said I did
I was wrong
I have been laughable wrong
Sandpaper, paper maché stock, cobweb

Oh, the city
We are scared now
But nanananana…

Well, I didn't have to be afraid
I didn't have to feel so stupid
I can see myself
I can feel...

With just the slightest bit of finesse
I might have made a little less mess
But it was what it was
Let's all get on with it now

Discoverer! x four
We're laughing…
Discoverer!

Floating across Houston
It's where I am
I see the city rise up tall

The opportunities
The possibilities
Well, I have never felt so calm

Remember, the vodka special night of discovery
Remember that
Laughing, discovery
Oh how I look back and reflect
How I felt it, how I said
I don't have to feel so wrong
Now, why don't you take a few steps back and grasp…

Repeat Chorus

Happy to take any corrections or thoughts on the song in the comments!

Track Listing 'Collapse Into Now' revealed by REM

27 November 2010

The  final track listing for R.E.M.'s new album Collapse Into Now, has been  revealed to restless fans in the latest R.E.M. Fan Club newsletter, released in late November:

Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I Lyrics REM

Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I Lyrics REM

Taken from the Collapse Into Now album, this is perhaps one of R.E.M.'s most blatant lyrics, directly referring to a famous figure in the title and lyric of the song. For those born in a cave, Marlon Brando was considered one of the greatest actors to grace the silver screen.

Lyrics:

We live and dream about the future
Please ask me up I need to count well now
Sit through the annals of our favorite times
Our heroes and all their fade out thoughts
Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I say

Lay me down, down, down, down
Lay me down, down, down, down, down
Help me off to sleep
Or take me deep again

We live and dream about our heroes
I listened closely and I said
I'm not sure where to place myself here friend
I might wanna go on wings instead
The winners write the rule books
The histories are never [right]

Lay me down, down, down, down
Lay me down, down, down, down, down
Help me off to sleep (down down down)
Or take me deep again (down down down)
I heard what you said (down down down)
I picture brass rings in your head
What golden [Brahms] in my mind
Our brass is mixed with red

That Someone Is You Lyrics R.E.M.

That Someone Is You Lyrics R.E.M.

This song is from R.E.M.'s album Collapse Into Now.

Lyrics:

With the restraint of New Order covers, young marble giants
I sat quietly waiting
For someone else to make the first move
Someone has to make the first move...

That someone is you
That someone is you
That someone has pulled me up and out of cartoon quicksand
Pulled me up and out of me!

And with the fury lock of Sharon Stone Casino
Scarface, Al Pacino
'74 Torino

Waiting for someone else to make the first move
Someone has to make the first move

That someone is you
That someone is you
That someone has pulled me up and out of cartoon quicksand
Pulled me up and out of me!

Pulled me up and out of cartoon quicksand
Pulled me up and out of me!

Mine Smell Like Honey Lyrics R.E.M.

Mine Smell Like Honey Lyrics R.E.M.

Mine Smells like Honey is a track from the REM album Collapse Into Now. Out of context, the song name possibly conjures up images of sexual innuendo, but a quick read or listen of the lyrics assures us that the song is refering to - anything!

Mine Smells Like Honey Lyrics:

I would dare you, but I know I don’t need to
You’re going to do just what you want to
You’re going to take the leavings here at the fairground
You’re going to sing the praises of your fruit

Mine smell like honey, uh!
Mine smell like honey, uh!
Mine smell like hu, hu, hu, hu, honey, uh!

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper!
Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Track a trail of honey through it all

If the end comes faster than we had expected
And predictions lead us to the final fall
If the flowers crack the grave (grain?) and leave the patterns of the pavement
I can hear you shouting over it all

Mine smell like honey, uh!
Mine smell like honey, uh!
Mine smell like hu, hu, hu, hu, honey, uh!

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper!
Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Track a trail of honey through it all

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper!
Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Track a trail of honey through it all

You track a trail of honey through it all
You track a trail of honey

Oh My Heart Lyrics REM Collapse Into Now

Oh My Heart Lyrics REM

This song is from R.E.M's album, Collapse Into Now. It's a pretty genius lyric from lead singer Michael Stipe with its references to singing buildings and the cross pollination of the concept of tyrannic government with the tryanny of love. Or something. Actually Mike Mills the song is "a hymn of love to the Crescent City with deep-blue brass by the local band Bonerama"

Oh My Heart Lyrics:

The kids have a new take
A new take on faith
Pick up the pieces
Get carried away

I came home to a city half-erased
I came home to face
What we faced
This place needs me here to start
This place is the beat of my heart

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

The storm didn't kill me
The government changed
Hear the answer and call, hear this song re-arranged
Hear the trees, the ghosts and the buildings sing
With the wisdom to reconcile this thing

It's sweet
And it's sad
And it's true
How it doesn't look bitter on you

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Mother and father
I stand beside you
The good of this world might help see me through
This place needs me here to start
This place is the beat of my heart

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(Oh my heart)

Uberlin Lyrics REM

Uberlin Lyrics R.E.M.

Uberlin is from R.E.M.'s new album, Collapse Into Now. A nice acoustic number from R.E.M. with Micheal Stipe in fine sing voice.

Producer Jacknife Lee (Who produces U2) said "Michael had a lyrical idea that was so complex that I didn't understand what he was getting at even after he explained it to me. He has pages and pages of lyrics and ideas with backstories for characters that don't figure in the song."

Mike Mills was actually explain the meaning behind the song: the "character is in trouble but doing his best to get through it. He's gonna make it. But it wasn't easy"
Uberlin Lyrics:

uberlin

hey now
take your pills
and
hey now
make your breakfast
hey now
comb your hair and off to work

crash land
no illusions
no collision
no intrusion
my imagination run away

i know, i know, i know what I am chasing
i know, i know, i know that this is changing me

I am flying on a star into a meteor tonight
I am flying on a star, a star, a star
I will make it through the day
and then the day becomes the night
I will make it through the night

ah hey now
take the u-bahn
five stops, change the station
hey now
don't forget: the change will save you

hey now
count a thousand milion people
that's astounding
chasing through the city with their stars so bright

i know, i know, i know what I am chasing
i know, i know, i know that this is changing me

I am flying on a star into a meteor tonight
I am flying on a star, a star, a star
I will make it through the day
and then the day becomes the night
I will make it through the night

Well I don't mind repeating
I am not complete
I have never been the gifted type

well hey man
tell me something
are you off to somewhere?
do you want to go with me tonight?

I know, I know that this is changing
we walk the streets to feel the ground
I'm chasing through Berlin

I am flying on a star into a meteor tonight
I am flying on a star, a star, a star
I will make it through the day
and then the day becomes the night
I will make it through the night
