R.E.M.'s Manager Bertis Downs has put this on the interwebs
"In a summer of uncommonly gorgeous settings for R.E.M. concerts (Bilbao, Lyon, Verona, Locarno, and Dresden immediately come to mind), last night's outside Udine (in the far northeastern corner of Italy), stood out in its unique beauty: the show was in the huge interior courtyard of a centuries' old manor house that now houses Friuli's exceptional contemporary art museum. The crowd and band certainly responded to the soft summer night in such a splendid setting with an amazing concert that included some little-played favorites like Turn You Inside Out, Nightswimming and Sitting Still (and End of the World popped up again, as it has done a few times now in Europe). And I'm Gonna DJ and Supernatural, placed early in the set rather than at the end, worked great and really got the crowd going. Fun, loud, exuberant night and what a place-- Fruili was new to us, and quite a revelation. "
R.E.M. played an concert in Verona, Italy. Italy its shaped like a boot. That's why they like to play soccer and watch the Godfather. Sleeping with the Fishes is a popular pastime, as it going to an R.E.M. rock concert.

BERTIS hey, great fun in Dresden today...great to be in germany we did a truncated soundcheck so Editors could get in a soundcheck of their own, and this is the result (listen )...I was trying to add a Berlinish twist on the lead voc...Editors are on now, and sound amazing.

Peter Buck has a BIG WEEKEND AHEAD WITH OXEGEN AND T IN THE PARK
R.E.M. plays two of the summer's most highly-anticipated festivals this weekend with headlining concert slots at bothIreland's Oxegen FestivalSaturday (set list here) andScotland's T In The Park Sunday. Both events expect massively huge crowds just shy of 100,000 each and feature stellar main and secondary stage lineups (clickherefor more details of R.E.M.'s tour) including such notables as The Verve, Amy Winehouse, Rage Against the Machine, Stereophonics, and Kings of Leon.
R.E.M.'s stop inDublinon Saturday is a homecoming of sorts as it marks the band's return to the scene of their now legendary five-night stint at the Olympia last summer where many of the tracks that evolved into their 14th studio album,ACCELERATE, were honed. During their stay in Ireland last year, the band also took in theOxegen Festivalas spectators following their working rehearsals, and it was the Irish festival which cemented R.E.M.'s plans to tour in 2008.
R.E.M. also has a rich history in Scotland, having performed gigs at Barrowland early in their career (1985, 1988) as well as consecutive concerts at Stirling Castle in 1999(see A Stirling Performance)and most recently at Loch Lomond and Glasgow Green (2005). For a preview ofT In The Parkbe sure to read this interview with Mike, who discusses the festival and the making ofACCELERATEwithThe Skinny. TheDaily Recordalso has an article on R.E.M. online today...

Bertis Downs gave this preview:
Well every day is different, that is for sure . . . tonight we are in Lyon playing one of the nights of the venerable Les nuits de fourviere . R.E.M. will play in a classic Roman amphitheatre tonight here in Lyon and tomorrow night in Nice. Wonderful to be back in France and wonderful to have a nice, dry day unlike the first few shows in Holland, Belgium and Spain. The catering tonight for band and crew is set way up on a hill in front of a manor house somehow attached to this theatre-- that is not an everyday occurrence. And the festival, which has been going for some seventy years, tomorrow night features Leonard Cohen and Thursday night Damon Albarn . . . and all sorts of theatre and dance spread over more than six weeks night after night-- a pretty decent attraction for this part of France. The iTunes Live From London EP is out, some new R.E.M. shows are announced, we head on to Dublin and Glasgow this weekend for festivals, then Germany, Switzerland and Italy next week-- it is summer in Europe on tour and all is well.
Losing My Religion / R.E.M. / Out of Time / Lyrics
One of R.E.M/s most popular songs, its a mandolin based obessive love song. The song hit number 4 on the American Billboard chart and has been their highest charting.
Here's some wiki info:
In the song, Michael Stipe sings the lines "That's me in the corner/That's me in the spotlight/Losing my religion". The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means losing one'stemperorcivility, or "being at the end of one's rope." Stipe toldThe New York Timesthe song was about romantic expression.[He toldQ magazine that "Losing My Religion" is about "someone who pines for someone else. It's unrequited love, what have you." Stipe compared the song's theme to "Every Breath You Take" byThe Police, saying, "It's just a classic obsession pop song. I've always felt the best kinds of songs are the ones where anybody can listen to it, put themselves in it and say, 'Yeah, that's me.'"
Losing My Religion by REM. Lyrics by Micheal Stipe
Oh, life is bigger It's bigger than you And you are not me The lengths that I will go to The distance in your eyes Oh no, I've said too much I set it up
(chorus) That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight, I'm Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no, I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try
Every whisper Of every waking hour I'm Choosing my confessions Trying to keep an eye on you Like a hurt lost and blinded fool, fool Oh no, I've said too much I set it up Consider this Consider this The hint of the century Consider this The slip that brought me To my knees failed What if all these fantasies Come flailing around Now I've said too much I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream That was just a dream
(repeat chorus)
But that was just a dream Try, cry, why try? That was just a dream Just a dream, just a dream Dream
Well what does Mr Wikipedia think about Mr Mike Mills? He's known as R.E.M.'s bassist and the geeky dude that does harmony and wheres silly nudie suits on stage.
Most people have no idea he writes songs like Let Me In and plays other instruments...
"Though known primarily as a bassist, piano player and background singer, his musical repertoire includes many other keyboard, guitar, string, wind and percussion instruments. He also contributes to much of the band's songwriting.
Yeah Yeah, those stars all shine down like butter. Remurmur wants to know what else?"
Find the River, people, the second best song on Automatic for the People. The Drummer wrote the best song! The drummer! They usually only get drool on their IQ tests! We can argue about the Troggs cover another day. But lets just say Wet Wet Wet did a better one eh?
OK I'm slightly convinced, Mike Mills might be awesome, so prove it one and for all?
R.E.M. / Castello d'Empuries, Spain / Concert Set List
July 5th 2008 - R.E.M. Accelerate World Tour
Again with the Orange Crush opening. The more I think about it, it's a great move to start a concert with that song. The opening riff is monster and even the most casual fan would promptly recognise the song about soda pop (are you sure? - Ed) and thus be instantly in a great mood for the concert. What do I care? It's a free world, baby Peter Buck can play what ever he wants!

Bertis Downs noted "midnight, it was a stunning performance--on top of a mountain in the middle of Bilbao, in a city park in the misty steady rain--we are now 3 for 3 with weather this little run--but hey, it's EUR and we will hope for better tomorrow in Castello d'Empuries on the other side of Spain."
With the Depature of Bill Berry from R.E.M. prior to recording the UP album R.E.M. chose to continue on as a 3 legged dog - with the help of a hired percussion mallet expert - and have settled on Bill Reiflin as their drummer. So a new Bill for the bill.
Here's an interview with Bill borrowed from REMHQ. It covers how he learns new songs, how he gets the feel for them to play them live.
CONFESSIONS OF A MAN-SIZED RIEFLIN
R.E.M.'s drummer, Bill Rieflin, and
HQ's David Bell recently had what one might loosely term a "conversation" the day of the Atlanta show. As you'll see from the photo, Bill's mouth was covered with a strip of orange tape, for some strange reason, so the admittedly "amatuerish" interview ensued as best it could with the aid of modern devices of technology as the protagonists sat side-by-side on the couch wielding their iPhones and MacBooks:
HQ: Tonight's show is in Atlanta, the last stop on the North American tour; how have things evolved from the Langerdo festival way back when?
BR: Langerado seem so long ago, like it was a different tour. That show was a bit rough-and-ready, but furious. We definitely have our sea legs now. We're really good and, best of all, the shows continue to get better and better. So that's a good evolution.
HQ: Your playing on accelerate and the tour has been widely hailed and praised for both its intensity and its precision. Is there anything about accelerate, the album, that lends itself to a "bill rieflin" signature style?
BR: ummmmmmm.... i'm not sure if i'm the best one to elaborate on my so-called "signature style," but, i hope this means that i play the right thing at the right time. for 'around the sun,' this meant one thing. for 'accelerate' this means another. it's undeniably fun to play drums with intensity and power, as on 'accelerate.' for sure this is what the music needs to make it lift off. but the drumming on 'electron blue' is pretty cool too.
HQ: When you play pre-around the sun and pre-accelerate tunes, what's the mindset? Be as honest to the original as possible or is their some wiggle room for you to improvise...
BR: when i began preparing for the greatest hits tour 5 years ago, we would obviously be playing a lot of old material. it was important to me that when we played, it sounded like r.e.m. too frequently, when a band gets a new person, it never quite sounds right afterward. so, i wanted to do what i could to make r.e.m. sound like r.e.m. essentially, this meant that i needed to be able to channel bill berry. i immersed myself in the records, listening to them over and over. i not only needed to get the notes right, but i wanted to discover what made bill tick, to learn what i could about why he played what he did, to know his feel. feel is subtle and complex. it's not only up to the drummer, but rather, it's the sound of how everyone integrates together.
HQ: Do you have any personal favorites you look forward to playing every night?
BR: 'be-bop-a-lula' is one of my faves. 'song sung blue' is another one. do you mean the shows? ah. let's see..... i love 'ignoreland.' each time we play this has the same life and magic as the first time we played it. probably 3 weeks ago. the new arrangement of 'ive been high' is really nice. 'harborcoat' is fun if only because i get to laugh as mike struggles with his really fast bass part. the set changes every night so there are always surprises that keep things fresh.
HQ: Which songs are the most challenging for you?
BR: when a new song is introduced into the repertoire, it can take me a while before i figure out how to play it. not just the mechanics, but the feel and the spirt of a piece. 'time after time' was like that although i think i've got a handle on it now. 'auctioneer' is still a little puzzling. but at the risk of sounding, well, you know, we've all been playing really well. i include myself in this.
HQ: You also drum with the Venus 3, the minus 5, and have your own project slow music; how does the playing vary from band to band, project to project? Do you play guitar in slow music?
BR: yow. the very short answer is that these are all very different adventures and each require something different from me. a group is a dynamic organism - changing just one part can radically alter how things function and work together. for instance, even though there is only one personnel difference from the M5 to the V3, they are significantly different creatures and what i do in each is different. this holds, more or less, for everything i do. as for slow music, i was playing keys, synths, and electronic percussion.
HQ: You get a few days off before the European tour starts; any plans? Is it hard to turn off the momentum and turn it back on on command?
BR: my plan is to be at home - pay bills, catch up on bookkeeping, that sort of thing. in order to stay in shape i'll be practicing during the break. i have some nice calluses on my hands and i'd like to keep them, thank you. oh! and i'll probably watch some television. scintillating stuff, huh?
HQ: Last question, what are you listening to music wise and what are you reading these days? Thanks...
BR: for the first time, i brought an i-pod with me and something to listen to music to in my room. i spent hours and days loading it up will all my favorite records. but in boston i bought a marvin gaye greatest hits cd. it's the only thing i listen to. i'm crazy about the song 'i want you.' it's one of the greatest things ever. i totally love it. when i get like this about a piece of music i'll listen to it over and over. in fact, i want to hear it right now. as for reading, i admit that i find reading a more difficult proposition on tour. i've been lugging around a few books but haven't yet cracked them. one is oliver sacks's 'musicophilia.' i'm halfway through it. but i was halfway through it a month ago.

Bertis Downs, R.E.M.'s manager has this round up of Euopean leg:
"This first week of the European tour holds some promise: the band's first time ever toBilbao and a festival near Girona two less obvious places in Spain, although we will return for Madrid and Murcia at the end of this run (late Sept/early Oct); then two shows in Roman-times amphitheatres in Lyon and Nice next week in France; then on to Dublin forOXEGEN (first time although we enjoyed it as punters during Dublin residency last year), and over near Glasgow for T IN THE PARK , one of the big Scottish days out. So it isn't taking long for the band to get into the swing of the European festival and great midweek shows kind of thing-- many highlights to come. I am especially looking forward to Italy in a couple of weeks (Perugia, Verona, Naples, Udine and Milan) bookended by Swiss festivals in Locarno MOON AND STARS and Nyon PALEO. I expect the band to pick it up where they left off on those last American shows and with the crowds and enthusiasm over here, take it up a couple of levels higher-- here's hoping. "
